Baiyun International Convention Centre integrates green design elements with Lingnan climate characteristics and climate data, following the principle of “passive first, active optimisation” in green building design by selecting appropriate comprehensive design strategies.
The project embodies design features in four aspects:"Local design, energy-efficient comfort, intelligent control, and ecological resilience".
Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Centre International Convention Hall project is located at the western of Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou, aiming to be an international political and economic convention centre for Guangdong Province (the Greater Bay Area) and even for the whole country. The project is led by the team of academician He Jingtang, and the construction specifications are in line with the successful international venues in the country. It takes high efficiency, high quality, new classics, and new technology as construction targets, and takes the new Lingnan classics as the starting point. It also adopts the exemplary design form in China and Lingnan architectural and garden elements to integrate with each other, emboding the characteristics of Lingnan garden-style stacked plan layout. With the help of modern technology, it creates flying and converging modelling elevation, which highlights the upward trend of the times, and finally builds it into a landmark building with international standard, Chinese model and Lingnan characteristics. The project was first put into use in December 2022, and has been held multiple major political and business meetings in the province and city. It has received favourable comments from the Government and all sectors of the community as well. The project has now won a number of national awards, including the China Construction Steel Structure Gold Award, the Jin Yu Award, the First Prize for Innovation in the Science and Technology Award of the Building Decoration Industry, the First Prize of the China Illumination Award, and the IFLA Excellence Award.
The traditional Lingnan architecture highlights the integration with nature, adaptation to the environment, and mingling with different cultures. It is a pragmatic and innovative creative direction. In the hot and humid subtropical climate, it is highlighted as a response to ventilation, sun shading, heat insulation and moisture protection. These passive energy-saving measures on one hand reduce the energy consumption of Lingnan buildings and obtain a relatively good and comfortable building environment, and on the other hand, they become a symbol of the form and spatial characteristics of Lingnan buildings.
The Baiyun International Convention Centre is a modern interpretation based on Lingnan architectural features, responding to the regional climate. As the project will need to fulfil the function of being the main venue for China's main diplomatic summits, the design team focused on echoing the Baiyun mountains and the Pearl River in the conceptualisation of the scheme. Large horizontal eaves and vertical louvres as well as elevated floors are utilised for shading. Landscape facilities such as Lingnan gardens and outdoor water surfaces are installed at high radial locations at ground level to promote ventilation to optimise heat dissipation, improve the outdoor thermal environment and mitigate the urban heat island effect. Give full play to the Lingnan style.
Baiyun International Convention Centre integrates site-specific natural conditions and architectural functional requirements, employing energy-saving design strategies that combine both active and passive measures, and the main measures and results are as follows:
It utilises high-performance building envelope structures, achieving an overall thermal performance improvement of over 20%, surpassing the stringent requirements of the 3-star certification for green buildings.
The ventilation and air conditioning systems, as well as the water supply and drainage systems, extensively incorporate variable frequency technology.
Lighting is equipped with an intelligent control system tailored to different functional settings, defining various scene modes and controlling individual lamps through separate circuits and zones to save electricity.
The centre also features high-performance heating and cooling source units for the heating and air conditioning systems, surpassing the stringent requirements of the 3-star certification for green buildings.
Photovoltaic panels are installed on the project roof according to specific conditions, enabling self-production and consumption of electricity, with the renewable energy output meeting approximately 2.79% of the building’s annual total electricity consumption.
In terms of carbon emission control, the project achieves building carbon emission control through the adoption of energy-efficient building design, intelligent energy control systems, the use of renewable energy, and extensive green roofs to increase carbon sinks.
The project adheres to the principle of ecological priority, combining natural ways with artificial measures, and under the premise of ensuring the safety of urban drainage and flood prevention, the six means of "infiltration, retention, storage, purification, utilisation, and discharge" are used, and rainwater storage tanks, permeable paving in squares, sunken green space and other low-impact development techniques are adopted in the area to improve the seepage, stagnation, storage and purification capacity of rainwater. The overflowed rainwater is finally discharged to the municipal rainwater pipe network or the river. This project sets up low impact development (LID) rainwater system according to the requirements of sponge city, and mainly adopts roof greening, permeable pavement, sunken green space, rainwater collection and reuse, etc. The specific measures are as follows:
Green roofs are considered for podium roofs to reduce the project's comprehensive runoff coefficient and beautify the outdoor environment.
The project's greening and garage area is large, in order to save tap water, the project's greening watering and garage washing water use all the collected and treated rainwater, rainwater collection tanks and reuse water supply equipment are set up in the area.
In the certification of three-star green building labelling, the building needs to meet the requirements of the pre-requisite items before the labelling certification can be carried out. On the basis that Baiyun International Convention Centre meets all the requirements for three-star green building certification, the level of implementation of some of the provisions is better than that required by the high standard, setting up an action benchmark for active response to green building actions.
Obtained a three-star certificate for the technical service report on the level of green and low-carbon development issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
Baiyun International Convention Centre has simultaneously achieved the goals of energy saving and carbon reduction, time saving and management optimisation, responding to the national dual-carbon work and the strategy of developing new building industrialisation.
